cover up (33 min, 30 MB)
as anyone who knows me can attest, I'm a sucker for a quality cover, and one of my many life quests is to create a complete, CD-length cover chain (a series of songs where each band covers a song by the next band in the series). I have made several attempts, but most approaches hit a dead-end, usually due to mistaken authorship (e.g., no, radiohead has never covered the deftones, dammit). this podcast begins with my strongest lead, then shoots off in its own direction, but the songs are pretty badass in their own right nevertheless.
1. of montreal - know your onion! (the shins)
2. the shins - we will become silhouettes (postal service)
3. postal service - suddenly everything has changed (flaming lips)
4. flaming lips - can't get you out of my head (kylie minogue) (ed. note: the lips are a great jumping-off point and can take you to the white stripes, radiohead, queen, etc. radiohead worked the best but due to an unfortunately mislabeled mp3, my greatest accomplishment yet...14 tracks...has been nullified)
5. the cardigans - iron man (black sabbath)
6. stars - this charming man (the smiths)
7. nouvelle vague - a forest (the cure)
8. the decemberists - bridges and balloons (joanna newsom)
9. luna - season of the witch (donovan)
10. yo la tengo - when doves cry (prince)
11. bonnie prince billy - ignition (r. kelly)
12. belle and sebastian (with morrissey, or so it would seem) - the boy with the thorn in his side (the smiths)

Love the effort, maestro.

This mix is tops. It's been taking me all week to digest, and it seems to come on at just the right moments. A little elbow in the side of my complacency. Thanks Jed.
